A Flag, an Anthem
Contrary to much of generally accepted ideas,
Pasquale Paoli is not at the origin of our Anthem and our Flag.
A Bandera Testa Mora
The white standard, with the image of the
Immaculate Conception (Marie, mother of Christ in Christian mythology), is
adopted by Cunsulta of 1735, date of the first Constitution of the Corsican
State. Although existing for a long time in the weapons of Corsica, it is only
later, in 1745, that Gaffori raises the flag tohead of Maure. In 1762, Cunsulta
di Corti decides that the head of Maure will be struck the currencies.
An Anthem, DIU VI SALVI REGINA
To listen to an extract
There too, it is at the time of the first
Constitutions democratic (January 30, 1735) that Corsica was placed under the
protection of Marie.

Diu vi salvi Regina
E madre universale
Per cui favor si sale
Al paradisu
God saves you Queen
And Mother of the infinite one
Of which graces us
With the paradise
Voi siete gioia è risu
Di tutti i scunsulati
Di tutti i tribulati
Unica speme
You are to laugh and joy
Of all the unconsoled ones
Of all tormented
Single faith
A voi suspira è geme
Il nostru afflittu core
In un mar di dulore
E d'amarezza
For you sighs and groans
Our tenderness which runs out
In an ocean of sorrows
And of love
Maria, mar di dulcezza
I vostri ochji pietosi
Materni ed amurosi
A noi vulgete
Marie, ocean of softness
That your eyes if pieux
Maternal and love
Are posed on us
Noi miseri accuglite
Nel vostru santu velu
Il vostru figliu in celu
A noi mustrate
Accomodate our miseries
Under your saint veils
And your son who is with the sky
Show us
Gradite ed ascultate
O vergine Maria
Dolce è clemente è pia
Gli affetti nostri
Approve and listen too
Ô Virgin Mary
Soft and generous
Our plain tendernesses
Voi dai minici nostri
A noi date vittoria
E poi l'eterna gloria
In paradisu
On our enemies
Give us the victory
And also eternal glory
With the paradise
